Alternative Energy

Our original idea with the arch (see Sept. 9, 2004) was to put the radar on top. However, our energy budgeting showed that we would be using somewhere around 100 amp-hours/day . While not a lot by cruising standards, we wanted to limit our reliance on cranking up the banger (i.e., diesel) to generate surplus electricity to charge the batteries. So we got three solar panels (two 55-Watt and one 85-W) and a wind generator to help contribute. We also had two propane cylinders, a GPS antenna, outboard engine, person-overboard-pole, life ring, and cockpit light for which to find homes. So, the radar got the boot to mid way up the mast.Posted by Hello

Windvane Naming Contest!!!

Our friend Malcolm Wilkinson helped out with a number of tasks, including installing the windvane. This contraption will actually steer the boat for us on a course set relative to the wind. Its technical name is a servo-pendulum self-steering gear. Ours is a Jean de Sud model by Cape Horn, which are made in Oka, Quebec. Most people name theirs as this is the single most important piece of gear on an offshore boat. Any suggestions would be considered (use the comment feature below). Posted by Hello
