Coos Bay to San Fran

Lo rocketing down the coast

We had some of the best sailing yet as we left Coos Bay...15 to 20 knot tail winds and a relatively calm sea (8 to 10 feet combined seas)… very pleasant. We set up the sails wing-on-wing, with the foresail on the opposite side from the main, to get the most of the wind. We enjoyed our first dinner together on plates (rather than out of the pot) with drinks, a beautiful sunset (red sky at night…) and our own private whale show to top it off!

Lo got a little nutty on some of her sunrise watches – here she’s saying “Hello” to those back home. Another beautiful sunrise on the Oregon coast.

The gnarly, dreaded Cape Mendocino was quite civilized for us. Weather gurus forecasted just 5 knots of wind so we went for it… but they were way off… there was NO wind. We motored around on Gary’s watch at 2-3 am with some light fog and stars poking through overhead. The next morning, we were surprised by the southeasterly winds on our nose (southbound sailors usually look forward to MORE favourable conditions around this cape). It was great to have this part of the coast successfully and uneventfully behind us.

Rounding the cape. See the little red boat? That's us. Posted by Hello

SAN FRANCISCO!!! Seeing the first glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge was fantastic and going under the bridge was incredibly exciting. We opened up a bottle of ice wine (thanks Margot!) in celebration of successfully completing this first leg, Vancouver to San Francisco, of our trip. Posted by Hello
