San Francisco
SF Bay Panorama

We tied up to the mooring buoys off the Sausalito Yacht Club and rowed ashore…to find St. Patty’s Day in full swing (oh yeah, it was the 17th!). We were treated like heroes by the club and they even fed us and gave us drinks. It was really great after such a long trip to be so warmly welcomed.
Peter Hoffman, one of our two primary ham radio contacts, lives in Berkeley and was an excellent host while we were in town. He ferried us around town for several errands and took us on a couple excursions (Marin Headlands hiking and downtown walking tour with his wife, Dei). Did you know that there is a flock of parrots that live on Telegraph Hill??? Of course, Lo and I took the trolley from Market St. to Fisherman’s Market (we waited an hour for it, but it was fun).

My little brother, Michael, recently moved to Sacramento with his wife, SunYoung, and their two children (Brandon and Cara). Mike drove us up to Sacramento for the weekend and we took the train back. They came down to Sausalito and stayed on the boat (all 6 of us!!)…what troopers. We took in the Bay Model (do a google on that, it’s really cool) and a drive down the coast south of SF.

We’ve had a great time here and highly recommend it to anyone. The city offers great scenery, interesting history, awesome food and wine, and a range of other attractions depending on your inclinations. Alas, we are now getting ready to head further south to the LA area. Stay tuned…

Wow, I can't believe you're in San Francisco already - that seems really fast to me. I'm loving the blog, and check it regularly. Safe travels!

Great adventure, and what a nice way to keep us informed of the ‘goings on’ by way of the blog. The pictures are really superb and give us a feeling of conditions that you are encountering, and of course personal experiences. I guess you have to wait until you get ashore before uploading graphics as I can’t see how ham radio bandwidth will allow enough data at the frequencies you will be using.
I travelled this coast ‘uphill’ sometime in my early sailing training years, and have to admit, it was some of the worst sailing I ever experienced, cold and wet, and this was in July; beating against North Westerly’s, off a not too inviting coast. Generally the downhill trip, nonstop is about seven to ten days Vancouver to S.F., in a boat your size, and anything around fourteen days motor sailing against the prevailing winds.
I really envy you heading the way you are, and I know for sure that this trip will probably change your life, like it did mine, in fact, I’m still trying to adapt to the shore life after almost ten years :), and long for the time when I can set off once again.
The technical aspects of your trip I especially like, as well as the personal one’s, as it’s nice to compare ‘how you do it’ and hear how the ‘locale’s', may have changed in the last ten years.
Once you get to the Marquesas you’ll truly feel that you’re in the tropics and that this is really I feel, where the adventure begins!
Have lots of fun, smooth seas and fair winds,
Regards Malcolm
Dear Gary and Lo, Your trip looks fabulous for us two land lovers and we admire your zeal for life. Dorothy and I were in Kaui and Maui in Nov. and Jan. The snorkeling was fabulous and the golf was great. We leave for Italy 4/11. I'll tell Lolah that we are still tracking your great adventure. Good Luck and Happy Sailing. I suggest Samantha for your Wind Vane after the tempermental and mischivious witch.
